Growing your list with a lead magnet

Attracting our crowd

This week on my social pages I have been continuing my topic of newsletters, with tips on growing your lists and how this is best done. I also covered what you can put in your newsletters, your newsletters can and should be varied, you can keep the same layout but I always feel its good to give a good mix.

You can get a little daring a create newsletters to be specific to certain sections of your list, so if you know someone 3 months ago bought a wax burner and a pack of 3 melts you’ll know that they will probably be looking for a refill, so you could send them an email with your new scents for that month?

Knowing your crowd

Lead Magnets

One way to get people to sign up with you is to offer free signup also known as a lead magnet, this is to drive new people onto your lists, people can often overthink this and feel that it has to big and pretty for people to sign up.

This is where most are wrong, it does not have to be a 16 page PowerPoint presentation or a 30-minute detailed video.  Your knowledge is what they are after, this could be in the shape of 2 page PDF with all the information you are offering on there with a few images.

In the current climate where face to face is pretty much non-existent, you might be thinking of creating more online offerings and you can attract new people via online guides, and once they have signed up you can share your knowledge to them via newsletter.

I know several Personal Trainers who have stepped up to the online mark and taken hold of this opportunity and run with it, and they have had amazing success, and now they are reaching out to a whole new crowd from home via online.

One PT friend had a fab lead magnet, it was a free 5-day lock-down exercise plan delivered by email every day, and people loved it and now runs group training via Zoom.

His lead magnet was a raw, in his garden warts and all, un-edited freebie, and people loved that approach as most of his clients were juggling work and children too, his client base has now grown.

Clear ideas

Some pointers

Become clear with your ideas, be clear with your focus and what you want to do with your list, and to speak to your crowd you need to know who you are talking to and how you are helping them with their problems and questions.

How can you help them move forward? once you know the solution can you create a snippet solution, so something that can help them immediately but will want to come back for more?

Take my PT friend, he knew with the gyms closing many people would need something to replace that loss of exercising at the gym and wanted to offer an alternative to his crowd, and let’s face it, for him it was all new too.

So he came up with a 5-day plan, knowing that it would appeal to some and they may want more, he played this well as he created 2 sign-ups, one was a 5-day exercise plan and the other was a 5-day menu plan and both were hugely successful and he has on the back of both sign-ups signed up 8 brand new clients

This weeks take away tips are:

Building your list is an essential part of your business

You can use your list to share new products and services

You can use your list to showcase their online shop

You can use your list to keep your crowd up to date with any changes in business or anything new

You can use your list to run a programme for your crowd to be involved in

Newsletters – 101

Newsletter 101

This month I am talking about newsletters and general e-marketing. What with everything going on in the world at the moment, being online and utilising e-marketing is the way forward and a sure-fire way to keep you and your business top of mind.

I think over the last few months we have all seen business moving more online and finding ways to keep in touch with their clients and potential clients, but there is still an air of caution for some business owners when it comes to sending out emails and newsletters to their lists.

I have been amazed at how many businesses have embraced online and found a way to carry on working whilst moving their face to face business to online, and watching how successful they have been.

During the month I will be talking to you about the following:

What are newsletters and why are they important to your business

List-building, how and why

Combining blogs with your newsletters

Sign-up and incentives

This week over on my Facebook Page HERE I have been talking about what is a newsletter, why they are so important to our businesses as well as the difference between a blog and a newsletter, as I have had chats with clients asking why they need to both or is one better than the other.

You can read them either by visiting my page or clicking the post links above.

Do you send out any newsletters? have you a planned schedule for them or do you send them out on high days and holidays?

Once you have got yourself into that routine it becomes easier, I think a lot of people struggle with content, I will be covering ideas on brainstorming for content later in the month.

Is there anything that holds you back?

I have created this template to show you how I set my newsletter template up, I created my template many years ago before MailChimp carried out a large update on their platform.

I have found having images dotted throughout your newsletter breaks up the text and removes the impression of ou talking AT your crowd.  If you do not have this template in MailChimp you can add in single images to break up the text.

Are you being Swept away?

are you being swept away

If you were to look in your inbox now how many emails do you have that will end up straight in the bin? If you were to look on your Facebook page (don’t check unless it’s a scheduled slot lol) how many groups are you part of that you check regularly? If you are on a podcasting stream how many have you got on there that have loads of un-listened podcasts on there?

I only ask as I am terrible! I sign up for so many things, I may get caught on Facebook but a paid advertisement and think ‘I need this’ and off I go and sign up, then I start getting their newsletters and I never read them, or I join a group of the Book of Faces and before I know it I have a ton of groups with loads of little notifications, telling me I have posts to read.  It is endless. I do get swept away with some signups!

Is it just me?

Please tell me it’s not just me and my terrible ability to move past an offer! I don’t think I could cope if you don’t do the same!

There is a solution

I am part of The Productivity Princess’ monthly group, and ‘Declutter’ is the order of the month, which has been about things like our download folders (HOLY MOLY!) but previous months have been on your inbox and what can we get rid of.  As much as it was a monster task for me, I did complete it, and I felt amazing for it, my inbox is a lot less cluttered.

How do you decide?

So, this one wasn’t too much of a difficult process, to be honest, I basically went through my deleted items, and all those that were deleted without being opened was my first port of call, every one of them I unsubscribed from them, then I headed into my inbox and went through those I knew were going to be heading in the same direction and followed the same process.  Now there were a few that I know would still be of benefit to me, so I have kept them in my action folder, but will keep a close eye on it, If I don’t visit that folder in a month then I really don’t need them.

What about groups!

Ok so this one is a little trickier, see I join groups as I feel they could be beneficial to me and my business but where does it stop being beneficial and become more detrimental to business, because you are spending far too much time reading through all the groups before you can get any work done!

I may have over thought this one a little too much, but I found that I revisited my ideal crowd and looked at the groups to see how well they matched, when I was last active in the group, was I imputing any value into the group, depending on those factors was the outcome as to whether I removed the group or not, this has been a fab exercise for me, as I have found there are a lot of groups I joined at the start of my business that really does not suit where I am now.  I have my VA groups that I am part of and will never leave them, they are my support line, my soundboards and fellow chit chatters when the days are tough, I also have a few business groups that to me are vital and worth their weight in gold so won’t leave them. So don’t remove yourself for the sake of it, but be honest with yourself as to whether they are actually a benefit to you anymore.

Don’t be the bull!

Don’t run through your inbox or anywhere that you are part of groups, and being that bull in a china shop clicking delete, unsubscribe to everything, that is not what I’m saying, just be honest with yourself, if you are not reading something regularly or visiting that group then maybe now isn’t the right time to be part of that group or mailing list, nothing is permanent, if you really miss that group or weekly email you can always re-subscribe cant you!

Go on give it a go

Engaging Newsletters – what the heck to write about

Engaging Newsletters

E-Marketing is a big part of my job, I have a few clients that have outsourced their regular newsletters to me, purely because they can be time-consuming.  Sometimes writing the content isn’t the problem, it’s the editing, making it look nice, making sure it’s readable and not too heavy on the information.

Avoid your crowd feeling they are being spoken at

You can run the risk of sending out a newsletter too light on information, but equally, you can overload your audience, there is a fine line when it comes to content overload.

I have found that if you have one long page of content it feels like you are being spoken at, and you really do not want your crowd to think you are just blurting information at them for the sake of it, so make your page visually pleasing too, this gives the illusion of being easier to read and your crowd will take in more of what you are offering.

What can I put in my newsletter?

Links

These little gems can help you with growing your audience on your social media pages.  Linking back to high engagement posts or a previous blog post is a great way to drive traffic from your newsletter to your other platforms.

Offers

If you have any special offers, freebies or vouchers this is a great way of getting them in front of your crowd, these are easy to embed in your template, you can create amazing images for your freebie in Canva

Video

We are not just limited to images on your newsletter, you can add videos too, what a great way to get something important over to your crowd, whether it’s a new offer, new freebie, new class etc why not create a fab video shouting about it from the rooftops to your crowd.

I have some clients that send me copy and ask me to jazz it up, others send me the whole thing in our share folders and leave it with me to add in the links, images etc and off it goes.

Get in touch

If you are wanting to start communicating to you crowd via a regular newsletter but haven’t a clue where to start, then why not get in touch, I will be happy to go through some options with you to get started.

Habits

We have all read those articles where they tell you ‘wake up at 5 am to become a millionaire’  or ‘drink a green smoothie to become successful’ – I think I have at least one of these articles in my inbox each week, telling me what I need to be doing to become a successful business owner.

Now I can tell you I DO NOT get up at 5 am, that to me is still the middle of the night, and I personally don’t like anything green to eat or drink so a green smoothie will never pass my lips. Ok I can tell you now I am not a millionaire nor would I say I was hugely successful (yet!).  What I can tell you, is, my business is producing a wage and I am comfortable.

pinch of salt

I personally don’t think these lists of what you should do, will benefit you in that way, I think you need to read them with a pinch of salt and to use them to perfect your routines, to make you more productive and focused.  I think it is great to read these articles and ones alike to see if anything they do could fit into your lifestyle and business routine if it doesn’t then move on.

I believe in normal ‘Sleep and Food’ – I feel eating and sleeping better does improve your productivity levels, whether this will, in turn, you into a millionaire who knows! We all know that when you was based in an office that Friday afternoon slump would kick in about an hour after you and your work colleagues got back from the pub, you know after that massive burger and chips you ate! I know from experience that massive lunch would turn me into the most UNPRODUCTIVE person ever.

Pub burger and chips = unproductive

I also feel that a healthy balance of exercise will help you towards a more productive week. Mixing that with your sleep and food, you should see a massive difference to your attention span during the week.

But none of these things I don’t feel will make you more successful nor do I think will make you a millionaire, these will help you to move forward and become the best you can be, and if that means it helps you create more business, then great, but I do wish these gurus would stop telling us these quick and sure-fire habits will fast track you to success.

You are the reason you are successful, you are the reason your clients what to work with you, not because you have a green smoothie on your desk!

To be honest, if you eat healthily, you exercise regularly, and sleep well you should see huge results in your productivity, use that to your advantage if you find you have more umpfh then use it to benefit you and the business.

So don’t be fooled with all the habits and routines that famous business owners are doing, as that works for them, remember running a business is not a one size fits all.  You need to find the routine and habit that works for you and your business.

Right I am off to munch on some random piece of food that has become fashionable
